How is the University involved?

Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit
The University holds a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit with the Illinois EPA. The University is not a municipality but for the purpose of this permit it functions similar to one because it owns and operates campus storm sewers. The permit allows the University to discharge water from the storm sewer into receiving streams. The University submitted its NOI on March 6, 2003 and received Permit No. ILR400523 [link] on October 12, 2004.

Storm Water Management Program
The University has a Storm Water Management Program that is composed of 46 best management practices (BMPs). The BMPs are expected to reduce pollutants, protect water quality, and satisfy MS4 permit requirements .

MS4 Community Collaboration
The University sought cooperation with neighboring MS4 communities to share information and resources to best comply with MS4 permit requirements. The MS4 Technical Committee includes representatives from the University, the City of Champaign, City of Urbana, Village of Savoy, and Champaign County. Committee activities include hosting Stormwater seminars for the construction industry and producing a Public Service Announcement.
