Procedures for Reporting a Spill or Unauthorized Discharge to a Sewer or Waterway

WHEN To Call
In all situations, life-threatening and non-life threatening, anyone who discovers what he/she believes to be a release of a suspect substance should immediately report the release to the appropriate officials.
 
WHO To Call
If release appears to be LIFE-THREATENING
  • Dial 9-911
If release appears to be INDOORS AND NON LIFE-THREATENING
  • Division of Research Safety……………………. .......333-2755
  • If no answer, call Campus Public Safety Dispatch.......333-1216
If release appears to be OUTDOORS AND NON LIFE-THREATENING
  • Division of Safety and Compliance…………………265-9818
  • If no answer, call Campus Public Safety Dispatch.......333-1216
WHAT to Say
Have the following information handy if it can be obtained safely:
  • Location of the Release (address and phone number of facility);
  • Date and Time of the Release;
  • Type of Substance Released;
  • Estimate Total Quantity Released;
  • Estimate Quantity that entered a Storm Sewer, Sanitary Sewer, Boneyard Creek, or
  • Embarras River;
  • Source of the Release;
  • What Media was Affected –Inside Building, or Outside to Land, Water or Air;
  • Cause of the Release;
  • Damages or Injuries Caused by the Release;
  • Actions Used to Stop, Control or Mitigate the Effects of the Release;
  • Whether any life is threatened by the release – is an evacuation needed?;
  • Who else was contacted?
