Promote rechargeable battery recycling

Facilities and Services commenced the Call2Recycle rechargeable battery and cell phone recycling program at the Physical Plant Service Building in October 2005. Call2Recycle provides the free collection boxes and also pays for shipping charges. Call2Recycle accepts and recycles non-functional, rechargeable Nickel/Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Lithium Ion, and Small Sealed Lead batteries less than 2 lbs.

Rechargeable batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be recycled or disposed of according to EPA regulations. In four years, Facilities and Services has saved approximately $5,000 in hazardous waste disposal costs.

Environmental Compliance has expanded the recycling program to Stores and Receiving and also to the College of Veterinary Medicine. Contact us if you are interested in starting your own program!
